Does Insurance Cover Online Therapy? What You Should Know

One of the first questions people ask before starting therapy is also one of the most practical: what is this going to cost me? It’s a fair question, and money worries shouldn’t be the reason someone goes without support. Here’s a clear, honest overview of how insurance and telehealth therapy work.

The short answer: usually, yes. Since 2020, the vast majority of insurance plans cover telehealth therapy the same way they cover in-person sessions. Federal and state rules have made virtual mental health care a standard, covered benefit for most plans, not an exception you have to fight for.

What “covered” actually means for you. Coverage doesn’t always mean free. Depending on your plan, you may have a copay (a flat fee per session), coinsurance (a percentage of the cost), or a deductible you need to meet first. Two people with “good insurance” can pay very different amounts, which is why it’s worth checking your specific plan rather than assuming.

How to find out what you’ll pay, in five minutes. Call the member services number on the back of your insurance card and ask three questions: Do I have outpatient mental health (behavioral health) telehealth benefits? What is my copay or coinsurance for a therapy session? Do I have a deductible, and has it been met? Write down the answers and the date you called. That short call removes almost all the guesswork.

If you’re paying out of pocket. Some people choose to pay privately for more privacy, more flexibility, or because a particular therapist isn’t in their network. If that’s you, ask about self-pay rates upfront so there are no surprises. Many clients also use an HSA or FSA card to cover therapy costs with pre-tax dollars.

Our role in this. We want the cost conversation to be clear from the start, not buried in fine print. When you reach out, we’ll talk openly about your options so you can make a decision that works for your budget and your life.

Don’t let uncertainty be the reason you wait. If you’re not sure whether you’re covered, the fastest way to find out is to ask both your insurer and us. A few minutes now can be the difference between putting it off another year and getting the support you deserve.
